The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, India, is a multipurpose sports arena hosting football (soccer) and other sporting events, as well as large-scale entertainment events, such as concerts by India’s leading musical acts and entertainers. It is named after the first prime minister of India. The facility seats 78,000 spectators,^[1] and up to 130,000 for concerts. In terms of seating capacity, it is the third largest stadium in India and the 51th largest in the world. The stadium also houses the headquarters of the Indian Olympic Association.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was first constructed by the Government of India to host the 9th Asian Games in 1982 (India had also hosted the first Games in 1951, also in New Delhi). It also hosted the 1990 Asian Championships in Athletics. The stadium will also host the upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games. In preparation for the Games, the stadium is undergoing a refurbishment that will reduce the capacity to 60,000 spectators.
